How to Break a BIOS Password

Have you ever been locked out of an old computer by a forgotten BIOS password? There's no need to get frustrated. It is relatively easy to bypass this safeguard.

Steps

Desktop

  • Power off the computer and make sure that it is unplugged.
  • Open up your computer case. You need physical access to the motherboard to complete this procedure.
  • Find a circular, (mostly) silver metallic object on the motherboard. This is the CMOS battery.
Cmosbatt_771.JPG
  • CAREFULLY remove the CMOS battery and leave it out for about 120 seconds. This will flush the CMOS memory which stores the BIOS password and all other configuration. (See Warnings)
  • Set the battery back into place and power on the computer.
  • The computer should then warn you that the CMOS configuration could not be found. You can either reconfigure it yourself or restore defaults. Restoring the default configuration should be fine.
  • You will notice that the BIOS password has been cleared and you can boot without it. You may reset the BIOS password to something else by going into the BIOS configuration and setting a new User Password (The Supervisor Password controls access to the BIOS, NOT the computer!)

Laptop

  • Remember that laptops can be trickier, especially if it's a newer model. If it has a security chip on the motherboard forget about it. You either have to physically remove the chip or contact the mfg for the "master" password. If you can boot up off of a cd or floppy try any of these methods:
  • Create a Win98SE bootable media "or anything that lets you boot into MS-DOS" and boot off of it.
  • When the A:\> prompt appears type debug and press enter.
  • You will then only see a "-".
  • Type o 70 2E "include the spaces" and press Enter.
  • Type o 71 ff "include the spaces" and press Enter.
  • Type q and press Enter.
  • Here are a list of common mfg backdoor passwords:
  • AWARD BIOS

o AWARD SW, AWARD_SW, Award SW, AWARD PW, _award, awkward, J64, j256, j262, j332, j322, 01322222, 589589, 589721, 595595, 598598, HLT, SER, SKY_FOX, aLLy, aLLY, Condo, CONCAT, TTPTHA, aPAf, HLT, KDD, ZBAAACA, ZAAADA, ZJAAADC, djonet, %øåñòü ïpîáåëîâ%, %äåâÿòü ïpîáåëîâ%

  • AMI BIOS

o AMI, A.M.I., AMI SW, AMI_SW, BIOS, PASSWORD, HEWITT RAND, Oder

  • Other passwords you may try (for AMI/AWARD or other BIOSes) - LKWPETER, lkwpeter, BIOSTAR, biostar, BIOSSTAR, biosstar, ALFAROME, Syxz, Wodj

Tips

  • Depending on the manufacturer of your motherboard, you may be able to use what it is called a "backdoor password" to bypass the password problem. Try looking at the external links for possible passwords.
  • Remember that passwords are Case Sensitive. The last two passwords in the AWARD BIOS list are in Russian.
  • Sometimes the bios reset jumper has a "handle" and is colored a bright color to make it easy to locate. Also, look in your case near the bottom. If it is a manufactured computer then it probably came with a little sticker with the jumpers and the location of the reset jumper.

Warnings

  • In rare cases, the battery may be soldered into the motherboard and very difficult to remove. If this is true, you may need to find a jumper near the battery that achieves the same result. If you don't know which jumper it is, you CAN test them all. Unplug (really unplug, not just power off) the computer, and start a methodical change in all the jumpers positions, change one, count to ten, change it back, move on the next. After completing the lot of them (on older motherboards this could take a while) plug the PS back in, and boot up. You may risk damaging your computer with this procedure if you are not careful.
  • Some notebooks such as IBM's ThinkPad render useless when the BIOS password is being tried to reset.
  • Don't just start pulling jumpers on the motherboard. Make sure you know where it was and in what position in case anything goes wrong put it back.
  • If you turn your computer on and it makes strange noises / beeps, you should contact the vendor, manufacture, or a tech guy to fix it.

How to Get Free Internet on a Verizon Wireless RAZR V3M

What do you mean WAP isn't FREE?! Well.. usually in order to access the WAP or Wireless Web you need to call Verizon's customer service and pay a monthly fee for WAP access. If you have a messaging package though, often times wireless WAP is included. However, regardless, you will still be using minutes — whether or not you use this FREE WAP modification or not.

What this modification does is changes the proxy that you use to actually access the WAP. When you use Verizon's proxy, which is default, you get charged for minutes usage AND for actual transfer of data (uploading/downloading). So in essence, by changing the proxy, you avoid paying the extra fees for anything and everything you see on the WAP.

Also, it has been reported that using this FREE WAP modification also means that you -don't- have to sign up for access to the wireless web… that's right… that means that is only uses minutes… no monthly fee, no data charges, just minutes. And yes, that means that FREE nights and weekends means absolutely FREE WAP.

Steps

  • Open your phone. Press #0SETUP* or #073887* — QUICKLY — If you pause while typing #0SETUP* in, it may not work. Also note that that's a ZERO [0] not an OH [O]
  • "Enter Security Code:" should be on the screen - type 000000 which is SIX [6] ZERO's [000000] and then Press the right soft-key which is the top-right button, closest to the screen.
  • Web sessions should be the first item in the list, and should be highlighted. Press the right soft-key for Select
  • Press down to highlight [New Entry] and then press the right soft-key for Select
  • Here we will setup the new web session to in essence give us FREE WAP. Name should be highlighted. Simply start typing a name and it will take you to another screen to input text. This is not that important, and you can name the web session anything. For this application, we named our web session Google. After you're done naming your web session, press the left soft-key for OK
  • Homepage should be highlighted. If it is, Press the down key 3 times or simply scroll until you highlight Gateway IP 1:. Here we will put the IP address of Google, which will serve as our proxy. I believe that simply typing in google.com for the "Gateway" will work as well… but the following is how free wap is usually described.
  • To enter the IP address, simply start typing by Pressing the 6 key which will take you to a text input screen with a 6 on the screen at the far left. This is the first number of our IP address. Press 4 then press the right arrow key so that the cursor is after the first period. The screen should now read 64 .| ._ .___
  • Now we need to enter the rest of the numbers. Type 233 and pause then Type 167 and pause then Type 99 and that should be the end. Your screen should now read 64 .233 .167 . 99| and if it does, Press the right soft-key for OK
  • Press the down key twice or until Port 1: is highlighted. Press 8 as that's the first number for the port and will get you into the text editor. Then press 0 which should make it say 80 on the screen, and if it does, Press the left soft-key for OK. The other ports listed below Port 1: can be left as their default.
  • And now we're done! Press the right soft-key for Done and the screen should say Stored: Google
  • You should be taken back to the list of Web Sessions. Highlight Google then Press the center button (in the middle of the up/down/left/right keys) and it should begin your web session with Google.
  • AND VOILA! You now have FREE WAP by using Google as a proxy. You should start out at the google web page, and you should be able to steer away to another page by using your phones menu.

Emergency Boot

Steps

  • When the computer starts up, hold down F8 before you see the "Windows Starting" screen. This will bring you to a screen with choices. Your best bet will be "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". You can then do as you wish.
  • dialogue will appear: you're going to want to go down to the bottom and select "All Files". Then you are going to name the file: Batch.bat. After that, go to where you saved it, and open it. That will open up Command Prompt.
  • However, if the computer has notepad blocked, you can easily go to any web page and then go to "View>View Source". That will easily open up Notepad.
  • After that, you will be able to do as you wish inside command prompt. Here is how to add or delete accounts:

** Add Account: C:>net user USERNAME /add
** Delete Account: C:>net localgroup Administrators# # Another way is to open up notepad, (if its not blocked), and type in "command.com". Then goto File->Save As. A USERNAME /ADD

Tips

  • Don't be dumb and mess up someone else's computer. Only do anything like this if you need access to the root of Windows. It was written for learning only. Also, don't try anything unless you know something about DOS.
  • Its much more fun to use the Emergency Boot CD…check it out.

How to Change Text on Windows XP Start Button

This is a simple Easy to do Introduction on how to change your start button text, image, and hover text. This is a fun way to Spruce up your computer to your special touch!

Steps

  • First of all, make sure you download Resource Hacker.(See Ext. Links below to download Resource Hacker) You'll need this puppy to edit resources inside your Windows shell.
  • Locate explorer.exe in your c:\Windows directory. Make a copy of the file in the same directory and rename it explorer.bak.
  • Now launch Resource Hacker. In the File menu, open explorer.exe. You'll now see a bunch of collapsed folders.
  • Expand the String Table folder and then find folder No. 37 (folder No. 38 if you're in Windows Classic mode).
  • Click on resource 1033 and locate the text that says "Start." This is your Start button, and now you've got control over what it says! Change the "Start" text to your text of choice. You don't have a character limit, but the text takes up valuable taskbar space, so don't make it too long.
  • Click on the button labeled Compile Script. This updates the settings for your Start button. But nothing will happen until you complete through step #20, so keep going!
  • CHANGE YOUR HOVER TEXT
  • While you're here, why not also change the text that pops up when your mouse hovers over your Start button?
  • Right now it says "Click here to begin." Well, duh! We already know that's where to begin!
  • Open folder No. 34 and click on resource 1033.
  • Find the text that says "Click here to begin" and change it to something cooler.
  • Click on the Compile Script button to update this resource.
  • CUSTOMIZE YOUR START ICON
  • For an added bonus, you can also change the Windows icon to the left of the text, too.
  • Collapse the String Table folder and expand the Bitmap folder at the top of your folder list.
  • Click on folder No. 143 and click on resource 1033. You should see that familiar Windows icon.
  • Go to the Action Menu and select "Replace bitmap." Select "Open file with new bitmap", and locate the replacement image on your machine. Note: The image must have a .bmp extension and a size of 30 pixels by 30 pixels. Then click the Replace button.
  • Now that you've made your changes, save the file in your Windows folder with another name, such as newstartbutton.exe. Don't name it Explorer.exe, because that file is already being used by your system. Close all open programs and restart your system.
  • Boot into Safe Mode With Command Prompt by pressing F8 on startup. Then choose Safe Mode in the command prompt.
  • Log on as administrator and enter your password.
  • When the command prompt comes up, make sure you're in the right directory by typing "cd c:\windows" (without the quotes).
  • Now type "copy c:\windows\newstartbutton.exe c:\windows\explorer.exe" (no quotes). Type "yes" (no quotes) to overwrite the existing file, then restart your system by typing "shutdown -r" (no quotes).
  • When Windows relaunches, you'll see your new Start button in all its glory!
  • An easier way to enable the new settings is to open task manager and end all instances of "explorer.exe" then click "save" in the Resource Hacker menu. At this point you might see a "Windows File Protection" popup. this is just telling you that the file was modified (which it was, by you)just click "cancel" then "ok". the final step is to open up task manager then click on "new task" then enter "explorer" or "explorer.exe" (all without quotes) and you should see your changes.

Tips

  • Be sure when you are ready to save your new start button to the windows folder in (step 16) that you name it "newstartbutton.exe" - (without the quotes) as this will be a lot easier to remember and won't require remembering - but write it down on the printed paper of this page if you can't remember it.

Warnings

  • Don't forget. You are playing with System Critical files here. So backup important data first in case something goes wrong

Things you need

  • Resource Hacker (to edit system kernel files and edit resources within the system shell)
  • Approximately 10 minutes of your time
